Points, Lines, and Line Segments

Exploring fundamental geometric concepts of a point, an infinite line, and a finite line segment.

Class 6 · MathematicsCBSE & ICSE

Definition

A point is an exact location represented by a fine dot and has no dimension. A line is a straight path that extends endlessly in both directions without any endpoints. A line segment is a portion of a line with two distinct endpoints, possessing a fixed, measurable length.

Worked examples

1

The tip of a sharp pencil represents a point.

2

A stretched thread held tightly between two hands represents a line segment.

3

A railway track extending endlessly in both directions models a line.

Common mistakes

  • Thinking that a line has a fixed length that can be measured with a ruler.
  • Forgetting to draw arrowheads at both ends when representing a line.
