Class 6 · MathematicsCBSE & ICSE

Definition

A fraction represents a part of a whole or a collection of objects. It consists of two parts: the numerator, which tells how many equal parts are taken, and the denominator, which shows the total number of equal parts the whole is divided into.

Key formula

Fraction = Numerator / Denominator

Worked examples

1

If a pizza is cut into 4 equal slices and you eat 1 slice, the fraction of the pizza eaten is 1/4.

2

Out of 10 students in a room, 3 are wearing glasses. The fraction of students wearing glasses is 3/10.

Common mistakes

  • Confusing the numerator and the denominator by placing the total parts on top.
  • Assuming the parts of a whole do not need to be equal in size.
