Class 6 · MathematicsCBSE & ICSE

Definition

Large numbers in practice deal with expressing and reading very large quantities using Indian and International numeration systems. These systems use place values like Thousands, Lakhs, Crores (Indian) or Thousands, Millions, Billions (International) to make large figures manageable.

Key formula

1 Lakh = 100 Thousands, 1 Crore = 100 Lakhs = 10 Million

Worked examples

1

Write 5432105 in the Indian system with commas: 5,43,21,05 (Wait, correct comma placement: 54,32,105 = Fifty-four lakh thirty-two thousand one hundred five).

2

Convert 1 Million into Lakhs: 1 Million = 10 Lakhs.

3

Read the number 7,53,21,400: Seven crore fifty-three lakh twenty-one thousand four hundred.

Common mistakes

  • Placing commas according to the International system while writing numbers in the Indian system.
  • Misplacing zeros when converting words into numerals or vice versa.
  • Forgetting that the International system groups digits in threes whereas the Indian system groups the first three and then in twos.
