Using Brackets

Simplifying numerical expressions by expanding and solving brackets systematically.

Class 6 · MathematicsCBSE & ICSE SOF IMO

Definition

Brackets are used in mathematical expressions to indicate the order of operations, meaning the calculation inside the brackets must be performed first. They help expand and simplify complex arithmetic statements without ambiguity.

Key formula

BODMAS / PEMDAS: Brackets first, then Orders/Exponents, Division/Multiplication, Addition/Subtraction.

Worked examples

1

Evaluate 5 × (6 + 2): Calculate inside brackets first (6 + 2 = 8), then multiply: 5 × 8 = 40.

2

Evaluate (10 - 2) × (3 + 1): First brackets give 8, second give 4, then multiply: 8 × 4 = 32.

3

Expand 7 × (10 + 2) using brackets: (7 × 10) + (7 × 2) = 70 + 14 = 84.

Common mistakes

  • Performing operations outside the brackets before solving the inside of the brackets.
  • Dropping brackets prematurely without completing the operation inside them.
  • Multiplying incorrectly when removing a bracket.
