Like and Unlike Fractions

Distinguishing between fractions with the same denominators and those with different denominators.

Class 6 · MathematicsCBSE & ICSE

Definition

Like fractions are fractions that have the exact same denominators. Unlike fractions are fractions that have different denominators, which means they represent parts of wholes divided into a different number of slices.

Worked examples

1

1/5, 3/5, and 4/5 are like fractions because they all share the denominator 5.

2

1/3 and 1/4 are unlike fractions because their denominators 3 and 4 are different.

Common mistakes

  • Treating unlike fractions like like fractions when performing direct addition or subtraction.
  • Comparing the numerators of unlike fractions directly without making their denominators equal first.
