Class 6 · MathematicsCBSE & ICSE SOF IMO

Definition

Equivalent fractions are different fractions that represent the exact same value or proportion of a whole. They can be found by multiplying or dividing both the numerator and the denominator by the same non-zero number.

Key formula

a/b = (a * c) / (b * c) where c is not equal to 0

Worked examples

1

1/2 is equivalent to 2/4 because multiplying both the top and bottom of 1/2 by 2 gives 2/4.

2

3/6 is equivalent to 1/2 because dividing both the numerator and denominator by 3 gives 1/2.

Common mistakes

  • Adding or subtracting the same number to the numerator and denominator instead of multiplying or dividing.
  • Multiplying only the numerator while forgetting to multiply the denominator.
