Understanding negative numbers, positive numbers, and zero as a complete set of integers.

Class 7 · MathematicsCBSE & ICSE SOF IMO

Definition

Integers are a collection of numbers consisting of whole numbers, zero, and negative numbers. They can be represented on a number line where positive integers lie to the right of zero and negative integers lie to the left. They are used to represent real-world situations like temperature below zero, elevation below sea level, and financial debt.

Worked examples

1

Representing a temperature of 5 degrees below zero as -5.

2

Identifying the opposite of +12 as -12.

3

Comparing -7 and -4 on a number line to show that -4 is greater than -7.

Common mistakes

  • Thinking that zero is either a positive or negative integer.
  • Believing that a larger number with a negative sign is greater than a smaller number with a negative sign (e.g., thinking -3 > -1).
