Division of Integers

Applying rules of signs to divide integers and understanding properties like division by zero.

Class 7 · MathematicsCBSE & ICSE

Definition

Division of integers is the inverse operation of multiplication. When dividing two integers with the same sign, the quotient is positive, and when dividing two integers with different signs, the quotient is negative. Division by zero is undefined for integers.

Key formula

(-) ÷ (-) = (+) ; (+) ÷ (-) = (-)

Worked examples

1

Dividing -20 by +4 results in -5 because the signs are different.

2

Dividing -36 by -9 results in +4 because both integers have the same sign.

3

Evaluating 0 ÷ (-7), which results in 0.

Common mistakes

  • Attempting to divide a non-zero integer by zero and stating the answer is zero.
  • Getting confused about the placement of the negative sign and incorrectly leaving the final quotient positive when dividing numbers with mixed signs.
