Representation on Number Line

Graphically positioning rational numbers accurately on a straight number line.

Class 8 · MathematicsCBSE & ICSE SOF IMO

Definition

Rational numbers can be visually represented on a straight line called the number line, where positive numbers lie to the right of zero and negative numbers to the left. To represent a rational number p/q, the unit space between integers is divided into 'q' equal parts, and 'p' parts are counted from zero.

Worked examples

1

To represent 3/4, divide the segment between 0 and 1 into 4 equal parts and take the 3rd mark.

2

To represent -1/2, move 1/2 of a unit to the left of 0 on the number line.

3

To represent an improper fraction like 5/3, write it as 1 and 2/3, then locate it between 1 and 2 by dividing that segment into 3 equal parts.

Common mistakes

  • Dividing the unit space into the number of parts equal to the numerator instead of the denominator.
  • Placing negative rational numbers to the right of zero.
